This video reminds me of my evening last Friday. I was invited by The National Ballet of Canada to live tweet the dress rehearsal of The Sleeping Beauty & what an adventure it was! I got to see Princess Aurora’s Act III tutu up close (so gorgeous), Elena Lobsanova as Princess Florine practicing in the rehearsal hall, dancers getting their elaborate Wedding scene headpieces put on, & was yelled at by stage hands when crossing the stage! All this chaos in the background for a show that looks so majestic & perfect on stage.
I was lucky enough to see Great Hodgkinson & Evan McKie in the title roles. McKie is a Canadian who is a Principal Dancer with the Stuttgart Ballet & had never danced in Canada before until now. They were a wonderful partnership; in a ballet which is more about dancing than emotion they truly showed their love for each other. Both are incredibly strong dancers - Hodgkinson refused the hand of her last suitor in the Rose Adagio, something I had never seen at the National Ballet. McKie put meaning & emotion into each step, jump, & turn as a lonely Prince Florimund. The crowd recognised both their achievements as many shouts of “bravo!” were heard throughout the evening. The Sleeping Beauty is arguably the greatest classical ballet & Hodgkinson & McKie’s partnership is one of the greatest I have ever seen on stage.
Sleeping Beauty runs until March 18. Greta Hodgkinson & Evan McKie will reprise their roles March 15th at 7:30 & March 18 at 2:00.
Thank you once again to the National Ballet of Canada for inviting me to have a sneak peek at what happens before opening night!
